Flooding trends in Savane Jong / Gonaives, Haiti: Pre- and Post- Hurricanes Gusav, Hanna, and Ike

Images - part 1 (5 mb)

This series of images shows the flood trends in Gonaives, Haiti, and environs as well as the recent impacts of Hurricanes Fay, Gustav, Hanna, and Ike.  You can see that Savane Jong is a frequently inundated grassland at the bottom of the Bassin de la Quinte watershed.  The size of the flooded area in Savane Jong increases substantially after heavy rains as a result of its location between numerous mountains.  Like the grassland, the city of Gonaives is surrounded almost on all sides by mountains, as well.  The last image shows a great sediment plume from up river and the city, flowing out to the sea.  Click on the graphic for full resolution.
