Floods in Lago Enriquillo, Dominican Republic E-mail

In February and March of 2009, much of the highlands in the Dominican Republic are still draining rainwater after a heavy rainy season and a wetter-than-normal dry season.  Here we see the effects of this drainage in Lago Enriquillo, which is actually located some 30m below sea level.  By February 26, 2009, the lake has increased in size by over 7,000 hectares when compared to its extent in 2000.  The lake’s surroundings have flooded even more than during the aftermath of Hurricane Noel in 2007.  NASA’s Landsat and MODIS sensors provided the satellite images that were utilized in this interpretation.
