Forest fire detected in Guatemala - february 2009 E-mail

A forest fire has spread across large parts of Cerro Pecul, also known as Santo Tomás, Guatemala.  The first satellite-based detection was on February 13, 2009, when a smoke plume covered approximately 19,000 hectares.

In the MODIS imagery from February 18, 2009, various “hot spots” were detected as well.  Based off the high reflectance captured in this image due to the large extent of the fire, it is estimated that approximately 230 hectares were burning at the time.
