Honduras Earthquake - may 2009 E-mail

An earthquake occurred during the morning of May 28th which registered 7.3 on the moment magnitude scale. The earthquake was registered off the Atlantic coast of Honduras, at a distance of 125 km from the costal tourist city of La Ceiba. The earthquake was felt throughout the region, with reports of tremor coming from Honduras, Belize, Guatemala and El Salvador. For the moment, however, only Honduras and Belize are reporting substantial damages from the earthquake.

The epicenter of the earthquake has been determined to lie close to the boundary between the North American and Caribbean plates. This plate boundary is renowned for its high seismic activity with a destructive 7.5 Mw earthquake having also occurred along this fault line in Guatemala on the 4th of February, 1976.
