SERVIR in USAID's booth at El Salvador's International Fair E-mail

SERVIR en Feria Internacional El Salvador  

San Salvador, El Salvador. November, 2010-The Regional Visualization and Monitoring System (SERVIR, in Spanish) for  Mesoamerica was displayed in the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)  at the El Salvador XXIII International Fair that was held in the International Fairs and Conventions Center (CIFCO, in Spanish),  November 9-14, 2010 in San Salvador, El Salvador.

On the opening night, November 9, the United States Ambassador to El Salvador, Mrs. Mari Carmen Aponte and other guests viewed SERVIR's display, tools and operation as presented by Eric Anderson, one of CATHALAC's scientific researchers.

USAID participated with a very dynamic both which displayed USAID's several of the ways its support has been chanSERVIR en Feria, Embajadora viendo imágenes 3D con lentesneled to El Salvador regarding environmental cooperation. Additionally, it has supported the countries in the region in solving some of its most critical environmental problems including solid waste management, water and air contamination: unsustainable fishing methods and marine ecosystem damage; the environmental vulnerability to the emergencies and risk associated to natural events. 

SERVIR operates since 2005 with USAID's support and it is implemented by the Water Center for the Humid Tropics of Latin America and the Caribbean (CATHALAC) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Feria_Emb_5It is a system that integrates Earth observation such as satellite images, and forecasting models with land knowledge and data, which has proven to be valuable decision making information for the countries in the region, including the Dominican Republic.

The El Salvador International Fair is a multiple sector International Exposition on social and economic development focused on environmental conservation and restoration, with the objective of promoting commercial, economic and social development in the participating countries, thus promoting an environmental culture among the different regions of the world. Within this space, one of its specific objectives is to help participant countries to share technological advances among them.

Some of the products displayed:

  1. Disaster Analysis - most recent regional analysis, including Hurricane Thomas animation.
  2. Strong winds related to the event - shows the magnitud and direction of the strong and cold winds  for 48 hrs in El Salvador.  It was colder, stronger and of longer duration than normal. The high magnitude of the winds can be observed in several areas in El Salvador, as shown in strong blue colors.
