Stormy eastern Caribbean and cloudy Mesoamerica |

Two named storms (Gustav and Hannah) have moved through the eastern Caribbean this week. Cuba was hit hard by Gustav and there were reports of wind gusts of over 200 miles per hour on the island. Hannah is moving slowly towards the Bahamas in the northern end of the Caribbean and is projected to come close to Florida by mid-week.
The MODIS imagery since Amy's posts on Wednesday have been difficult to interpret. Over Central America, almost complete cloud cover has been seen. In the image below, a few fires were marked in the MODIS Rapidfire imagery. Gustav is easily identified in the image.
In the eastern Caribbean and out into the Atlantic, the CALIPSO satellite is showing cases of elevated aerosols. Two overpasses, one from August 28 and the other from August 30 show evidence of dust.

Las tormentas nombradas (Gustav y Hannah) se han movido de la zona oriental del Caribe esta semana. Cuba sintió los fuertes vientos de Gustav, donde se registraron ráfagas de vientos sobre 200 millas por hora. Hannah se mueve lentamente hacia las Bahamas en la zona norte del Caribe y se espera que se acerque a Florida a mediados de la semana.
Las imágenes de MODIS, desde el comunicado de Amy el miércoles, no han sido fácil de intrepretar. Sobre Centroamérica, nubes han cubierto mayormente la region. El satélite CALIPSO indica que hay número elevado de aerosoles en el Caribe oriental y en el Atlántico. Los sobrevuelos del 28 y 30 de agosto muestran la presencia de polvo en las regiones antes mencionadas.
